It is a non-steroidal selective androgen receptor modulator: a small synthetic compound, not a steroid, that engages the androgen receptor without the four fused rings characteristic of testosterone and its relatives.

What originally motivated its study was tissue selectivity — the question, central to muscle-wasting research, of whether androgen-receptor activation in muscle and bone can be decoupled from activation in the prostate and elsewhere.
