SNAP-8, listed in cosmetic ingredient databases as acetyl octapeptide-3, is a peptide of eight residues with an acetyl group at the start and an amide at the end, designed to imitate the first part of the protein SNAP-25. Together with two other proteins, SNAP-25 forms the SNARE complex, the machinery that docks neurotransmitter vesicles and fuses them with the membrane of the nerve ending. By offering cells a competing copy of that sequence, SNAP-8 is investigated as a way to disturb SNARE assembly from outside the cell — quite a different approach from botulinum toxin, which cuts SNAP-25 inside it.
