## Description

This is purified water that has been sterilised and packed with nothing added — no preservative, no buffer. It is the most basic diluent there is for dissolving freeze-dried peptides, and the one to choose when you'll use the solution once only, when a compound is known to react badly to benzyl alcohol, or when a preservative could disturb a later assay.

Without buffer, salt or anything to set its tonicity, this water leaves the final pH and osmolality of your solution entirely to the peptide and to whatever you dilute it into later — something to bear in mind for assays sensitive to either, and the reason some applications use phosphate or another defined buffer instead. It comes in clear glass vials with a rubber stopper and aluminium flip-off cap, in 10 mL and 30 mL sizes; since the contents carry no preservative, the 10 mL vial is often more economical, because anything left in an opened vial has to be thrown away. A common next step is to divide a preservative-free reconstitution between sterile empty vials and freeze them — that avoids both repeatedly piercing one stopper and having benzyl alcohol in the final solution.

### When should I use sterile water instead of bacteriostatic water?

Sterile water contains no benzyl alcohol, so pick it when a preservative might interfere with your assay, when the peptide reacts badly to benzyl alcohol, or when you will either use the solution straight away or freeze it in portions. For vials kept in the fridge and drawn from several times, bacteriostatic water is usually preferable.

### Which sizes are available?

Two sizes: 10 mL and 30 mL. As each vial is for single use, many labs go for the 10 mL size so that less is wasted each time; the 30 mL vial is better for larger preparations made up in one go.

### Is it tested and documented?

It is produced as sterile, pyrogen-free water, and every vial carries a lot number and expiry date; lot documentation is available on request. For a plain reagent like this, the relevant measures are sterility and endotoxin limits, not HPLC purity.
