For everyday measuring on a peptide research bench, the 1 mL insulin syringe is the standard tool. Each is made in one piece with a 31-gauge needle, 5/16 inch (8 mm) long, that can't be removed; a clear barrel marked every 0.01 mL up to 1 mL, which equals 100 units on the U-100 insulin scale; and a plunger designed to leave very little liquid behind. They are delivered sterile, wrapped one by one and ready for use.
In reconstitution, the syringe draws up a measured amount of bacteriostatic or sterile water and adds it to a vial of freeze-dried peptide. The fine 31G needle pierces a rubber stopper repeatedly with barely any coring, and the 1 mL size fits the 1–3 mL usually needed to dissolve a vial of 5–20 mg. You can use the same syringes to move measured portions of dissolved peptide into sterile empty vials, for storing or diluting further.

What does “31G × 1 mL” indicate?
31G tells you the needle's gauge — a thin needle about 0.26 mm across — and 1 mL is what the barrel holds. On this model the needle is 5/16 in (8 mm) long and fixed in place. The barrel is marked in 0.01 mL steps, each equal to one unit on the U-100 insulin scale.
Why are insulin syringes used for reconstituting peptides?
Their fine, fixed needles go through stoppers with little coring, the slim barrel with 0.01 mL marks makes small volumes easy to read, and the low dead space leaves very little diluent or peptide behind. All of this fits the small volumes of lab peptide work.
Are they sterile and meant for single use?
Yes. Every syringe is sterilised and sealed individually, with caps protecting needle and plunger. Treat each one as single-use: take a new syringe for every vial entry and put used ones straight into a sharps bin.

This 31G × 1 mL syringe has a thinner needle and holds twice as much, so it is the better all-rounder for drawing up diluent. The 29G × 0.5 mL version has a slightly wider needle and spreads its markings over a smaller volume, which some researchers prefer for very small transfers.
