What does growth hormone do at the molecular level?
One somatropin molecule engages a growth hormone receptor pair at two binding sites, dimerising the receptor and activating the associated kinase JAK2, which in turn phosphorylates STAT5b. The resulting gene transcription increases IGF-1, the principal mediator of growth. Direct receptor actions include promoting lipolysis and opposing insulin's effect on glucose uptake.
Why are presentations given in IU instead of mg?
Somatropin labels use both units. International units were the historic measure of potency, and current products use the conventional conversion of 1 mg ≈ 3 IU. Is somatropin approved for muscle gain or anti-ageing?
No such indication exists: it is not authorised for athletic performance, bodybuilding or anti-ageing.
