Humanin is a peptide of 24 amino acids encoded inside the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (MT-RNR2), and it was the first mitochondrial-derived peptide ever characterised. It was found in 2001 while screening neurons that had survived in a sample from the occipital lobe — which is why its name points to that survival phenotype and not to any chemical feature.

Why does my humanin dissolve slowly?
Its sequence contains a hydrophobic, leucine-rich core, so it goes into solution more slowly than short hydrophilic peptides. Add the diluent gently, swirl for several minutes and, if necessary, warm it to about 25–30 °C instead of shaking the vial.
