Zinc thymulin is the biologically meaningful form of thymulin, a nonapeptide first obtained from thymic epithelium and called facteur thymique sérique (FTS) in older papers. Thymulin only folds into its active shape when it holds a zinc ion; the peptide without zinc circulates but is described as inactive until the metal binds. Supplying it already complexed with zinc removes a variable that has muddied much of the historical thymulin research.
