Cerebrolysin is a mixture rather than one compound: a standardised product made by digesting purified pig-brain protein with enzymes. It contains free amino acids together with a fraction of small, biologically active peptides — usually described as smaller than 10 kDa. For that reason it is specified quite differently from a peptide made by synthesis: you can't quote a single sequence, a formula or an HPLC purity figure; what matters instead is its concentration, the fill volume, its sterility and the documents for each lot.
Research on it goes back decades, carried out mainly in Europe and Asia on models of brain degeneration, reduced blood flow to the brain (cerebral ischaemia) and traumatic brain injury. The claim that runs through this literature is an effect resembling that of neurotrophic factors, with some papers comparing parts of the mixture with the body's own CNTF, GDNF and members of the IGF family. Because the product is a mixture, it is harder to pin down mechanisms than with a single compound, and consistency between batches is a central concern for study design.

Must it be reconstituted?
