Phenylpiracetam is a small molecule from the racetam family: piracetam with a phenyl group added to its pyrrolidone ring. The literature also calls it fonturacetam, and older Soviet-era papers use the name carphedon. The phenyl group makes it markedly more lipophilic than the parent compound, and that one structural change is where most of the comparative pharmacology about it begins.
Developed in the Soviet Union, it remains a registered medicine in a few post-Soviet countries. It is not an authorised medicinal product in the EU and has never been approved as a drug in the United States, nor is it a permitted food or dietary-supplement ingredient under EU or US rules. Because it has a chiral centre, it exists as R- and S-enantiomers with reportedly different activity; racemic material is what the literature usually describes and what is supplied for research.
