Cortexin is not one defined molecule but a complex of many polypeptides. It is made from the cerebral cortex of mammals and then fractionated, so that the final product consists of water-soluble peptides below roughly 10 kilodaltons, accompanied by free amino acids and trace minerals. It belongs to the same group of peptide products from Russia and Eastern Europe as Cerebrolysin, and neuropeptide research frequently discusses the two in the same breath.
As a mixture, it is characterised by fractions and activity, not by a sequence. Researchers investigate cortical peptide complexes for their influence on neurotrophic signalling, on neuron survival during ischaemic or excitotoxic stress, on the expression of synaptic markers and on electrophysiological measures in cultured neurons. A large part of the published work is in Russian, and replication in the West is scarce, so characterising the material is itself still a research question.

Questions about Cortexin
Is Cortexin one peptide?
No — it is a polypeptide complex: a fractionated mixture of water-soluble peptides under about 10 kDa plus free amino acids and trace elements. No single CAS number, formula or sequence applies, and analytical results are given as a fraction profile.
How is it different from Cerebrolysin?
Both are tissue-derived neuropeptide products built on low-molecular-weight fractions, yet their source tissue, production and presentation differ. Cerebrolysin comes as a solution in ampoules, whereas Cortexin is a lyophilised powder you reconstitute in the lab.
Which documents do you supply?
Each lot is tested for identity and for its fraction profile, using methods appropriate to a mixture of peptides, and the certificate of analysis can be requested. A purity value based on a single HPLC peak wouldn't make sense for a mixture, so the documents describe what it contains and how consistent it is instead.
How do I store Cortexin?
Keep unopened vials in the fridge (2–8 °C) or colder, protected from light and moisture. After dissolving, keep it chilled and use it soon — a mix of many peptides stays stable in solution for less time than a single, purified peptide does.
