Vilon is a two-amino-acid peptide — lysine joined to glutamic acid, written Lys-Glu or KE — with free amino and carboxyl ends. No compound in the Khavinson bioregulator range is smaller, and it is where the whole class began: while working with peptide extracts from the thymus, researchers at the Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in St Petersburg identified the shortest active sequence and then made it synthetically — a molecule that can be produced identically every time and characterised with precision.
With just two residues, Vilon is the natural benchmark for structural research on ultrashort peptides. Its size makes it ideal for modelling how peptides might recognise DNA, and for testing the minimum amount of sequence a peptide needs before it behaves selectively in a biological assay. Studies along these lines report that it changes how tightly chromatin is packed in cultured lymphocytes and alters the expression of a small number of immune genes.
In the lab it is mostly used in immune-cell models, thymus tissue preparations and long rodent studies of ageing that follow survival, cancer rates and immune markers.
